MWI Adjunct Scholar Dr. Tanisha Fazal, an associate professor of political science at Notre Dame, instructed cadets on her recent research on the costs of war. She spoke to DS-495: Research Methods, and polled cadets on how sensitive U.S. civilians as well as those with closer attachments to the military are to war casualties. Her research seeks to address the gap in previous research that equates battlefield casualties with fatalities and finds that because of more advanced military medicine, the wounded-to-killed ratio is skyrocketing. Her primary research question is: How sensitive is the U.S. general public to the war wounded as a cost of war? Her preliminary findings suggest that the war wounded have little to no effect on support for war amongst the general population. During her talk, she presented cadets with tools and advice for how to carry out a survey and discussed methodological challenges with her data and research design.
