Joel Blaxland is an assistant professor of political science at Western New Mexico University. His research focuses on the effects of violent conflict on democracy in sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia. He is particularly interested in how gender and ethnic quotas come about, the effects those quotas have on political representation and participation, and whether quotas adopted post-conflict to reduce the risk of the conflict trap. He has published with the Journal of Peace Research, Palgrave Macmillan, and Oxford and Cambridge University Presses. He also served with the US Army’s 75th Ranger Regiment and deployed on multiple occasions.
