Codirector, Project 6633

Dr. Elizabeth Buchanan is an Australian polar geopolitics expert and codirector of MWI’s Project 6633. Her research interests include Arctic and Antarctic geopolitics, energy security, Russian grand strategy, and strategic studies more broadly. Dr. Buchanan is Head of Research for the Royal Australian Navy. She was formerly a lecturer of strategic studies for the Defence and Strategic Studies Course at the Australian War College.

Dr. Buchanan holds a PhD in Russian Arctic strategy from the Australian National University. Elizabeth was formerly a Maritime Fellow at the NATO Defense College. She has published two books: Russian Energy Strategy Under Putin: Implications for Australia with ANU Press and Red Arctic: Russian Strategy Under Putin with Brookings Institution Press. Dr. Buchanan is a polar contributor for Jane’s Intelligence. She has published widely on polar geopolitics, most recently with the NATO Defense College, International Affairs, The National Interest, War on the Rocks, RUSI, ForeignPolicy, and Foreign Affairs. She has been a visiting scholar with The Brookings Institution and has work experience in the global oil sector. Dr. Buchanan is a team member of the EU-NATO Centre of Excellence for Countering Hybrid Threats’ latest research project on Russian Arctic strategy.
