Recently, retired Gen. Stanley McChrystal visited West Point and spoke to cadets and faculty during an event hosted by the Modern War Institute. Gen. McChrystal served for twenty-four years in the US Army, including time spent in command of the 75th Ranger Regiment, Joint Special Operations Command, and the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan.
He is also the author of the New York Times–bestselling book Team of Teams. He is a leading thinker on creating and fostering organizations built to thrive in complex and rapidly changing environments. In this talk, he spoke about his experiences in uniform, how he conceptualizes complexity, and the characteristics leaders should strive to achieve in their organizations—networked, flat, and committed to free-flowing information-sharing.
