The war in Syria has thrown a nation into turmoil, created a massive humanitarian crisis, and fueled the growth of the Islamic State. Award-winning author and documentary filmmaker Sebastian Junger’s newest film, Hell on Earth: The Fall of Syria and the Rise of ISIS, paints a powerful and detailed picture of that war’s consequences. MWI recently hosted Junger for a screening of that film and a discussion with several hundred West Point cadets and faculty. In addition to this film, the discussion touched on the combat experience, the sense of community that cohesive units develop at war, the difficulty of coming home, and other topics Junger’s books and films have addressed.
